Question:

A person who is in a vegetative state, with brain death, whose heart is beating only because they are connected to machines, do they still possess their soul?

Answer:

Dear Sir,

The term “vegetative state” is used in an ambiguous and confusing manner today. If the person is in a true vegetative state, that is, they are in a state of irreversible unconsciousness, but their vegetative functions are still active, operating organs such as the heart and lungs (assisted, in any case, by external machines, but not replaced by them), then the person is alive, and therefore, their soul is united to their body.
